Dual Pentium Pro PC running Linux

Phyppro0 is now available to be used by the physics department. It is intended to help non Linux Unix users get familiar with Linux and help those who use Linux use it better. This machine will be somewhat unstable for the next week or so (Sept 15 + 1-2 weeks) since there are some tests which are being planned for it. But in the mean time, anyone with an account on the physgi SGI computers, can log into it. All your home directories which reside on physgi0x are mounted on phyppro0. If you cannot log into phyppro0, please send e-mail to root@phyppro0 requesting your home directory to be mounted and make sure that it is exported to phyppro0.phy.bnl.gov.

Some of the hardware highlights are:

Some of the software high lights are:

I encourage anyone who uses the gnu compilers to do their work on IRIX, to try out their code on phyppro0. Anyone who has ntuples to analyze, please give you kumac files a run using the Linux version of cernlib 96a. Anyone running geant, I would like to here your comments on how fast your geant ran compared to the same code running on physgi03. Do all your tex processing on this machine.

To get a full listing of what software is installed, log into phyppro0 and type:

If there is any software that you want to install on phyppro0, send your request to root@phyppro0 and I'll see what I can do. I'm in the process of getting a good spread sheet and word processing software for those who need to interface with MS Word and Excelle files.

If you are interested in installing Linux on your home PC, you may want to attend the BNL Linux Users Group which meets every Wednesday at noon in the SEP building. (The same room where you took your Radworker I training)
