Minutes of April 29, 1996 E821 Schedule Meeting The outer coil radial stops arrived on April 29. The RHIC magnet guys install the strain gauges for us. It would usually take two weeks to install the strain gauges. We will work with them and try to install them in one week. On this schedule, we will be ready for pump-down/ cool-down around May 7. Cool-down takes about two weeks. Matthias discussed the instrumentation for quench protection, measuring the position of the mandrel, etc. His optical system for measuring the mandrel position rides on the radial arm. We must not obstruct the seven windows until we are at full current. Yannis discussed the quad tests. He plans to have the quad tank installed and pumped down by the time the coils are cold at a position opposite the inflector, ie. by the stairs from the control room. This tank does not obstruct any of the seven windows. His tests will be parasitic with powering the magnet. Hugh discussed tuning the beam. Tuning the beam at low intensity to the V-line proton beam dump will begin this Thursday, if the safety review is finished. First the beam will be tuned without hitting the target. Once this tune is established, fault studies will be done. Then target studies will begin, first a single bunch at low intensity, but finally all eight bunches at high intensity. According to this schedule, tuning to the g-2 ring would commence late next week. This would be done at night to keep the Lab power demand low and so we can work in the high-bay during the day. Dave discussed the detector plans under two scenarios: a) beam ends in May and b) beam runs through June. In either case, they would set up one detector outside the ring and pulse it with the laser/led system to get the DAQ system going. When there is beam, they would move into the ring. This will be carefully coordinated with the shimming team. The overall project schedule is shown below. The prototype kicker test is now scheduled for June, since there are still delivery problems with the HV feed-through. We should move a detector over next to the kicker in the LINAC building to understand noise problems when it is pulsing at full voltage.
