How to monitor the online system

There are several monitoring programs, which show the state of the online system. The most useful one is the main window on the daq program (see figure 1).
On top of the dui window is a pulldown menu called Processes, from where you can start the following monitoring programs:

• DD Processes: (figure 5)
  Starts up a window where the processes currently attached to the DD system are monitored. Typically there are 10-20 processes attached, which is too many to monitor. Use the SELECT button and enter the PID of the processes you want to monitor. The most useful informations are the FIFO to which the process is attached (see DD writeup) and the number of DD read/write operation the process is doing (per second as well as accumulated).

• FIFO monitor: (figure 6)
  This window monitors the active FIFOs in the DD system. The first FIFO (from the left) is the INPUT FIFO, which contains the empty buffers. The other scrollbars represent the flow of full buffers through the system. (Note: this monitor window is complementary to the DD processes one with the caveat that several processes can be attached to the same FIFO.) The number of read/write operations per second is printed in the text field on the right hand side of the window.

• Scaler Monitor (figure 7)
  This monitor program shows the most current scaler record that has been obtained from the DD system. Not necessarily every (but most) scalers are obtained depending on the CPU usage of the system.
  If you want to start the scaler monitor from another terminal (as its window is fairly large), then you can also start it from the bnlonl toolchest.
  The scaler monitor window is split into five parts:
  • Beam scalers: top left:
    Monitors the most recent beam scalers.
  • Trigger scalers: top middle:
    Monitors the most recent trigger scalers.
  • SSP memory usage: top right:
    In the (by now well known scrollbar format) shows the usage of the SSP memory for the last spill.
  • Misc scalers: below the SSP scrollbars:
    Lists some miscellanous scaler values. Of possible interest we list the B field and the spill number.
  • Ticker tapes: bottom half of the window:
    On the left hand there are five text fields into which any arithmetic combination of defined scalers can be entered plus two numbers that correspond to the value of the lower and upper limit of the ticker tape (e.g Ck/Cpi 0 10). The middle text field then displays the value of the arithmetic expression and on the ticker tape to the right appears the value of the last n-spills.
    By pressing the HELP button on the top right of the detector one obtains a list of defined scalers. Note the name of the scaler variable must be entered EXACTELY as shown in that help window.
