Lambda-Lambda Studies by Sequential Pion Emission

A further study of double-lambda hypernuclei is contemplated as an extension of E906. In E906 we intend to detect double-lambda hypernuclei produced in the (K,K) reaction with 1.8 GeV/c by observing sequential -mesonic decays. We will start with the lighter hypernuclei, e.g. H and He. This latter object has been termed the ``lambpha'' particle and is the hypernuclear analog of the alpha particle. It is a highly symmetic system of pairs of up, down, and strange quarks, and is the lightest triply-closed nuclear shell system. If this device is successful, we will extend the method to heavier nuclei in the p-shell.
